This updater folder includes components for the Virtual PC application and Mac integration components for Windows 95. To update Virtual PC and Windows 95 follow the steps below:
Updating the Virtual PC application:
1) Place the Virtual PC 1.0.1 Updater on your hard drive.
2) Double-click to launch the Updater.
3) To update the installed Virtual PC Application - select "Update". The Updater will ask you to locate your old copy of Virtual PC, update it to version 1.0.1 and prompt you to quit when completed.
Updating the Windows 95 Mac integration components:
1) Launch Virtual PC and the Windows 95 drive image.
2) From within the Virtual PC preferences set "INSTALL.W95" (located in the updater folder) as the "D Drive" and click the "Restart" button.
3) Once Windows 95 has rebooted open the "D" drive within Windows. Double-click the Setup icon to install the Mac integration components and follow the directions within the install application. Click "Finish" when it is completed.
Note: If you have multiple Windows 95 hard drive images you will want to update them all. If your hard drive is not in "Saved State" you may hold down the option key during boot to configure your preferences as described in step 2 of updating Windows.
The Preferences format has changed to include company name; you may be prompted for this when you launch Virtual PC 1.0.1 with a 1.0 preference file.
When examining its preferences, Virtual PC now looks for a preferences file in its own folder, before searching the system folder. This means that if you often run both Win 95 and DOS, for example, you can now set up separate folders, each with their own copy of Virtual PC, each with their own preferences, and painlessly switch between the two.
In Virtual PC 1.0, holding down the option key during start-up would show you the preferences dialog, allowing you to change parameters before starting up. In 1.0.1, if you are holding down the option key when Windows 95 shuts down, Virtual PC shows you the preferences dialog, allowing you to change your environment and restart without having to quit Virtual PC in the process.
There is a new option in the Virtual PC preferences dialog which allows you to disable playing of FM sounds. For slower Macs, this may result in substantially faster gameplay.
Virtual PC now ships with a MOUSE.COM driver, for use in DOS gaming. We recommend copying this file into the "CNTX" folder, and adding the following line to the file named DOSSTART.BAT inside C:\WINDOWS\:
C:\CNTX\MOUSE.COM
(This is performed for you automatically when you use the INSTALL.W95 disk image to update your copy of Windows 95)
Note that, when you boot Windows 95 into DOS (by holding down the F8 key during boot), you won't have access to either your CD-ROM drive or the mouse. Simply type "DOSSTART" at the "C:\>" prompt, and you will now have access to both.
Joystick support is now much more fluid under Windows 95, and more joysticks are supported. (You must use the INSTALL.W95 disk image in order to use the new joystick support, and the Connectix joystick must be selected in the Windows 95 Joystick control panel)
The CDROM.SYS file has been updated. Copy the new file to your CNTX directory, replacing the old one. (This is performed for you automatically when you use the INSTALL.W95 disk image to update your copy of Windows 95) (The new CDROM driver fixes a problem which prevented Mortal Kombat III, among others, from installing properly.)
Playback of videos, particularly in Encarta, works properly now.
Windows NT now recognizes the emulated SoundBlaster card.
Ethernet is now supported for a wider variety of Ethernet adapters. However, you may have to upgrade to Open Transport 1.2 in order to support your adapter. Currently, the only way to get this upgrade is to install Mac OS 8.0.
Postscript printing works better now for users of desktop printing.
We now correctly report the new variety of PowerPC chips: the "Arthur" (740/750) chip and the "Mach Five" (fast 604e)
Virtual PC now handles compressed mode printing improperly turned on by x86 print code.
Virtual PC now supports video modes that are 360 pixels wide.
Virtual PC works better now with certain modems; in particular, sometimes the baud rate was being incorrectly set.
Audio works better in LucasArts' X-Wing/Tie-Fighter
Sourcer no longer crashes when disassembling certain opcodes.
Myst, NBA Jam, Diablo, Vista Budgeting, Need for Speed and Need for Speed Special Edition all now work.
FWB's CD-ROM ToolKit, should be updated to 2.0.6 or later. Also, make sure in the CD-ROM ToolKit control panel that "Allow Mounting Of: Any ISO 9660 volumes on "dual-format" Apple HFS CD-ROMs" is checked.
Kensington's MouseWorks users should use version 5.0.2 or later and should follow the manufacturer's specifications for configuring the mouse. Make sure the Virtual PC Mouse preferences reflect this setting.
Other two button mice will work if the mouse or trackball supports the standard "Cursor device Manager" interface in the Mac toolbox and one or more buttons on the mouse are unassigned, Virtual PC will automatically use the next available button to emulate the right button.
Apple Geoport users must disable "Flow Control" located under "Properties," "Connections," "Advanced."
Removable and network drives may be accessed by using the "Shared Folders" feature of Virtual PC.
Some applications may not be able to open files from a Mac shared folder. Copying the file to the Windows C or D drive will make them accessible.
InfoWave (GDT) PowerPrint users must set the COM1 port to the Printer or Modem Port that the PowerPrint serial to parallel converter cable is connected. Within Windows 95 select the correct Windows driver (or closest driver) for the PC printer. Select COM1 as the printer port and click on Configure Port and verify the following 57,6000; Data bits: 8; Parity: none; Stop bit: 1; Flow Control: Xon/Xoff
An option in the Virtual PC preferences dialog allows you to Mute FM Sound Playback and is not noted in the manual. This may result in substantially faster gameplay.
